Taragon Project

Innovative technologies for sustainable production of double-sided compactors and bin washers

CUP project: E89J23013930009

The TARAGON project, promoted by Fratelli Mazzocchia SpA in collaboration with the Mario Lucertini Department of Business Engineering at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, aims to develop innovative and sustainable processes for the production and use of compacting and bin-cleaning vehicles. The project, with an expected duration of 18 months, is funded under the PR FESR Lazio 2021-2027 program, specifically through the Public Notice "Competitive Repositioning of RSI" in the Aerospace, Security, Automotive, and Sustainable Mobility sectors.

  • Context and Objectives

The project is part of the production of vehicles and equipment for municipal waste management, with a focus on research and development of advanced technologies for environmentally friendly production processes. According to the 2020 European Research Council classification, TARAGON falls within the PE8 - Products and Processes Engineering domain, with particular emphasis on:

    - PE8_10: Production Engineering and Industrial Design.

    - PE8_11: Environmental Engineering, with applications in sustainable design, waste management, recycling and carbon capture.

Within the RIS3 (Smart Specialization Strategy) regional specializations, TARAGON is positioned in the Automotive and Sustainable Mobility area, pursuing areas of interest such as the digitalization of production processes, quality optimization in assembly processes, and the use of predictive maintenance technologies.

  • Research and Development Activities

The project is structured in two main phases:

    1. Industrial research: Study and optimization of production technologies, definition of ideal operating parameters and development of control models.

    2. Experimental development: Design and construction of functional prototypes destined to revolutionize the industry. The program will start from a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 4 and reach TRL 7/8.

  • Innovative Solutions

TARAGON aims to implement disruptive technologies for environmental and economic sustainability, structured around three pillars:

    1. Bin washing vehicles:

    - Almost total recovery of the water used, with a reduction in consumption of up to 90%.

    - Completely dry cleaning systems, accompanied by lightweight, silent and automated vehicles.

    2. Bilateral compaction vehicles:

    - Handling systems that improve automation, safety, and speed in waste collection.

    3. Water treatment and cleaning of grates:

    - Processes to reduce water consumption, energy costs and polluting emissions.

  • Added Value

In collaboration with the University of Rome Tor Vergata, the project aligns with the guidelines of Industry 4.0 and sustainable mobility, integrating process engineering, industrial design, and environmental technologies. The goal is to create innovative solutions, currently unavailable on the market, to address the sector's environmental and industrial challenges.

  • Expected Impacts

TARAGON aims to generate tangible benefits in terms of:

    - Environmental efficiency: Reduction of consumption and harmful emissions.

    - Economic growth: Improving competitiveness and reducing production costs.

    - Social sustainability: Promotion of technological solutions that promote safety and quality of work.

  • Project Amounts

    Allowed Costs: €1,915,653.34

    Granted Contribution: €1,147,258.84

  • Conclusions

With TARAGON, Fratelli Mazzocchia SpA positions itself at the forefront of developing technologies for the urban waste sector, contributing to a model of a circular and sustainable economy.
